Before the swipe, the tap, and whatever comes next, there was the token. Created in collaboration with the New York Transit Museum, this set of four glasses preserves a rare piece of NYC transit history, with a different subway token embedded right into the base of each glass.

Together, the four tokens trace more than three decades of New Yorkers getting where they needed to go—from the Y Token of the 1970s to the final 5 Borough design of the MetroCard era. The way straphangers pay their fare may have changed, but some things haven’t: the rush-hour bustle, the screech around the bend, the race for closing doors, and the firm belief that there’s definitely room for one more person.
